With in Guajira we are able to see a constant mix of cultures and people. There are people that come from the center of the country, other s that come from Venezuela and indigenous groups all condensed in this arid region full of natural resources. Whether its wind, coal of salt there are plenty of business opportunities to appreciate here. Still, we see many differences in lifestyle. In my experiences I saw how about one or two hours from Cerrejón (where we see running water and electricity that are just examples of a lifestyle that is similar or even better than that of Bogotá) there is a group of people living in the conditions that Guayu family that welcomed us lived in (cooking with fire, nor running water and no electricity). These dichotomies we see here are greatly affect the social overview we have of the region. Incredibly, the large amount of money produced by el Cerrejón isn't being used in local social works that would help the life style of many people but is rather taken out to other countries. It is also interesting viewing how there is a wind farm that isn't being used to its ful capacity yet a few kilometers from it, in Cabo de la
vela, we see electricity is being produced by local generators. We also see a similar situation with the local salt mines which are mainly being controled by the state and who's income isn't being used locally but rather taken to Bogotá or other places of Colombia that aren't in such a dire need for governamental presence.
These great differences that we saw in Guajira are mainly caused by the governement which either doesn't use the money appropiately or it is so corrupt that only a small portion of the money produced by the region is actually used for the better of the local population. The only example of true development was shown in Cerrejón which looked more like a developed country than the Guajira that surrounded it. This un even social condition is an example that with a good management of money (speccially that of a company which doesn't tolerate or give opportunities for thiefs) there can be a great amount of development. That small developed country with in Guajira was made with less than 10% of the coal mine's production. Imagine what could be done with the full 100% that the government will recieve after the contract witht he companies expires.
With the appropiate management this departament could become one of the richest and most prosperous of the country but it does require appropiate management. There is no use for a windfarm that produces large amounts of renewable energy if there is no infrastructure for us to use that energy appropiately. Or a coal mine that produces billions of pesos a year if we don't even recieve 10% of it. Although this departament could be bettered greatly with he appropiate leadership it would take time and the appropiate use for the resources we are already exploiting.
In continuation to what this introduction to the complex economic situation of Guajira we must take many of the topics presented above to a greater depth. To do this we have Nick Ortiz and Eliott Lechter who will make an indepth analysis of a specific area of the sociological image I have just given.
Thank you Ivan....
I see participation from Ivan Jimenez only!!!! Remember this is an introductory article about the social situation of la Guajira that should be written by Nick Ortinz and Elliot Lechter as well!!!!
Also, I would love if you use pics taken by us! I have a lot if you need to find some
Thank you -- Mery Tellez
