Food in La Guajira

La Guajira as we know is not a region that has many resources. This causes not only social problems but economical problems. Food isn’t part of tourism in La Guajira since it’s not that easy to find exquisite dishes. People who are habitants of this region are somewhat poor but by the diversity of cultures, food is obtained and worked for. We had the opportunity to stay with the Wayuu tribe which actually obtains their food from their community. In La Guajira, a lot of fish is eaten since it’s a coastal region and some of the people’s jobs are the one in fishing and trading the food. When we ate fish, it came along with typical food from the coast which included arroz con coco, maduritos and salad. There’s not a lot of quantity always however other dishes are also accessible. The first day we had lunch in a place beside the beach and since there was not enough fish, some of us ate chicken. Even though there’s a variety of delicious vegetables and fruits, La Guajira is not a place where again, a large quantity of these are found. People who eat this have their own crops and as I said before, get their food from their own communities. In a Wayuu Rancheria, we experienced their culture and they actually eat what we eat but almost everything made by them and few products come from the supermarket. Trade is really important in La Guajira and goats make big part of it. Part of their meals is goat which is kind of different for us but for them is a delicious plate. Part of Wayuus daily life is taking care of their family’s goats which are also used to buy or trade other things from other cultures. On one of our breakfasts, we found Venezuelan peanut butter and butter and we asked why it was from Venezuela and they said it was cheaper and that they actually had to travel a long time to access to this kind of food that they don’t normally eat. This leads to a conclusion which is that people from La Guajira are actually healthy people since they all eat healthy and carry a different healthy diet in which almost everything they eat is produced by them.
