Adaptation in Plants from La Guajira

La Guajira is the region at northern part of Colombia and Southamerica. Most of the territory of La Guajira is mostly composed by arid and semiarid zones. The arid and semiarid are unique geografic and ecological zones were high temperatures and drought are extreme,in these are areas the vegetation are really limited and sometimes are absent. Such factors affect the behavior of variety a sprecies forcing them to adapt to the extreme conditions on these zones. La Guajira has a very limited amount of rain and has long periods of drought and anual temperatures of 27 to 30 C reaching a maximum of 45 degrees between day and night.

There are several different types of plants in la Guajira. These plants have to adapt to the difficult environment and the lack of water in that region. Near the oceans we can find two different ecosystems. Near the ocean and having roots underneath it we find the mangroves. The mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in salt water. The mongroves are house to many species endemic to the region, such like frogs toads and variaty of marine species. In order for the mangroves to adapt to the lack of water what it does is it opens its stomata which are the pores in the leafs surface and exchanges carbon dioxide gas and water vapor during photosynthesis, the mongroves are also known for their resistance to water with high concentration of salt and their ability to stand in very unstable ground.. Another ecosystem we can see is the bosque seco espinoso tropical located on the other side of the mangroves and has no contact with the ocean. The adaptations the bosque has its amazing. Trees in this area have thicker cortazas, thicker leaves, and longer roots.
